How to Manage Work Related Stress

Posted by Editor @ 9:03 PM, Sunday Apr 6th, 2008

In today’s business world, it sometimes seems as if there is too much to get done and not enough time to do it. Most people feel that they cannot finish their workload in an eight hour day. This can lead to high levels of stress and feelings of being overwhelmed. These two factors may lead some people to begin working more hours which may cause the quality of their work to suffer. Others may feel totally exhausted and give up. These individuals may begin doing the very minimum amount of work that they have to just to get by.

If this sounds like you, there is hope. Work-related stress can be managed with a few simple steps. First, there may be a need to organize and prioritize your work schedule. Most people are more demanding on themselves than others are. When you examine your daily routine, there are usually things that have to be done and others that are not really necessary. Decide the most important thing that you need to accomplish and work on that first. Once this is accomplished, move onto the next and work on that. As you go down through the list, you may find certain things that are not vital to the achievement of your goals. Eliminate them and concentrate on the essential tasks. This should cut down on your work load and relieve some of the pressure you have been feeling by trying to do too much.

You may evaluate your schedule and find that there is still too much work that you need to get done. You could try to delegate some of your tasks. Some people feel uncomfortable doing this. They feel that no one else is capable of doing the work as well as they can. There is no one who is irreplaceable. If you are worried about the quality of the work being done, select the best person possible and train them properly. Make sure that you explain in detail how you wish the project to be accomplished. Try to remain friendly and approachable. This will ensure that your assistant will feel comfortable asking questions and approaching you if they do have problems. You also want to make sure you are easily available. If your aide has to search for you to ask about a problem, they may give up and try to solve it themselves. Check on them from time to time and offer suggestions. After a reasonable amount of time, you may find that they are as capable as you are and that they can accomplish any project you give to them. This will lift a great load off your shoulders knowing that you have qualified help.

You may want to discuss your workload with your colleagues. They may have suggestions of ways to accomplish your projects faster and more efficiently. Do not be afraid to ask for help. Everyone in your workplace is trying to accomplish the same goals. An open line of communication can lead to better teamwork in the future.

Your career may be the greatest cause of stress in your life. Once you can control that, the rest of your life will become better also. There is an old saying that you should work smarter and not harder. Follow these simple steps and you may be surprised to find out how true this is.
