Managing your career can be challenging at times. Even if you’re happy in your current position, there may be other jobs available that can help you move your career further along. Depending on your goals, you may have to work in several positions before finding one that suits your needs. While the ideal way to do this is by working your way up in one company, the truth is that many people have to move from company to company until they find the right position. When managing your career it’s important to keep in mind the following:
·        Career goals
·        Personal goals (family, building your finances, owning a home, etc)
·        Likes/dislikes about your career
·        Education/additional training needed to meet your goals

Tip #1: Know What You Want
What do you want from your career? Do you want to be a manager or do you prefer being in the background? Both positions are necessary in order for most offices to run smoothly.
Tip #2: Write Down Your Goals
Writing down your career goals can help you realize what they are and how they can be attained. You can include both short term and long term goals.
Tip #3: Assess Your Current Position
Can the job you have right now help you meet your career goals? Even if your current job won’t help you meet all of your goals, you may be able to use it to meet some of your goals. Â
Tip #4: Evaluate Your Skills
Writing down a list of skills that contribute to the success of your career and which skills you need to acquire is a good way to plan for the future. You may want to go back to school or attend training sessions offered by your company in order to enhance your knowledge base. Â
Tip #5: Take On New Projects
If there is an area in your career that you have been wanting to break into, ask to be placed on a project that provides new experiences. Â
Tip #6: Ask for Feedbak
Asking for performance feedback from managers and others can help you determine which skills you need to work on. Ask for specific feedback when meeting with supervisors during your yearly review. This will give you a better idea of which areas need improvement and which ones don’t.
Tip #7: Research Other Companies
Researching other companies and job opportunities even when you’re not actively looking for a job can lead to new discoveries and help you decide the next step in your career.
Tip #8: Review Your Goals
Review your career goals often to see how close you are to accomplishing them and if adjustments need to be made.
Tip #9: Network with Others
Networking with other people is a great way to learn more about other job opportunities and a way to make business contacts that can benefit your current job.
Tip #10: Be Prepared for Change
Nothing stays the same, so be prepared for promotions, becoming a project lead, or taking up the slack when necessary as these tasks are all part of having a successful career.
