10 Goal Setting Tips to Boost Your Career Prospects

Posted by Editor @ 9:42 PM, Thursday Apr 24th, 2008

Even though setting goals may seem ridiculous to most people, those who set goals, write them down and review them often are more likely to realize them. While you don’t have to write down every little goal you want to accomplish during the day, creating a list of short and long term goals can help to put them into perspective and help you devise ways to accomplish them. Below you will find 10 tips for setting realistic goals in the workplace. Once you write down your goals on paper, it will be more difficult to forget them later on. Seeing your list each day should help keep you motivated as well.

Tip #1: Write Down Your Goals

If you have to meet yearly goals in your job, why not write them down? Taking the time to write down your goals is a way to remind yourself that these are the goals you need to meet the next time you sit down with your boss to discuss a raise. If you have additional goals, add them to the list.

Tip #2: Make Sure All Goals Are Realistic

Unless you’ve been with the company for years and years, chances are you will not be chosen to take over the company this year. Setting realistic goals such as earning a raise, earning a promotion or writing an article for publication are all realistic goals worth pursuing. By keeping your goals realistic, you’re giving yourself a better chance to fulfill them.

Tip #3: Review Goals Everyday

Keep your list of goals on your desk, on your computer or in your briefcase so you can be reminded of them everyday. By facing your list each day, you will be able to work toward meeting those goals by taking small steps such as volunteering to work on an extra project, give a presentation, or simply help out a coworker in need.

Tip #4: Give Yourself Time

Another reason why many people fail to meet their goals is because they don’t give themselves enough time to reach them. If you want a promotion, you will have to spend a year or more proving yourself. This may means taking on extra work, learning new skills or returning to school.

Tip #5: Understand Your Goals

Understanding what it will take to reach your goals is also important. This allows you to begin planning the steps needed to reach those goals and will also help you recognize new opportunities when they come along that can also help.

Tip #6: Picture Yourself Meeting Your Goals

When you picture yourself meeting your goals, you will only be motivated even more to complete them. Even if your goal is to clean out your office and become better organized, picturing your clean office with labeled boxes and files can help you realize this goal in less time.

Tip #7: Plan Ahead

If you know there are specific steps required to complete a goal on your list, you should write down how to achieve this goal so you can begin taking the necessary steps.

Tip #8: Get Excited About Your Goals

One of the best ways to achieve any goal is by remaining excited about it.

Tip #9: Review and Revise as Necessary

Review your goals and make changes if necessary. Changes include making your goals more realistic or lengthening the time it takes to realize them.

Tip# 10: Add Goals to Your List

Adding new goals can help you stay focused and allow you to pursue your dreams and passions with even more determination.
