Essential Procrastination & Goal Setting Techniques

Procrastination can be one of the biggest hurdles to overcome in your career, but with a little patience and determination, you can become better at managing your time and getting things done.

Reasons Why People Procrastinate

There are many reasons why people procrastinate. Identifying these reasons can help you overcome the urge to surf the Internet, work on other projects, or spend too much time talking with coworkers. Some of the most common reasons why people procrastinate include:

·         Task is difficult or stressful

·         Too many tasks to complete at a time

·         Task is uninteresting

·         Task is beneath them

·         There are more important tasks to be completedIf you procrastinate when there’s work to be done, one of these reasons may be the cause. But when you look at the task in a different way, you can oftentimes overcome the urge to procrastinate. Once you’ve uncovered the reasons for procrastinating, you should decide the best way to combat it and prevent it from happening again. Ways to beat procrastination include:

·         Better time management

·         Setting realistic goals

·         Maintaining focus throughout the day

·         Prioritizing your timeWhen you take steps to prevent yourself from procrastinating, you will find the tasks you’ve been avoiding weren’t that difficult or boring after all. While you may not fully enjoy every single moment of your day, being able to reduce stress and feelings of dread when these tasks appear can help make your job more pleasant.

Time Management

Learning how to manage your time is one of the more important skills you can learn in any job. When managing your time, you won’t have to worry about falling behind or putting off assignments until the last minute. By planning your day, you can get more accomplished, complete less desirable tasks early so you can focus on other tasks, and be able to have more time to plan ahead. 

Improving Focus 

One of the most common reasons people procrastinate is because they lose focus on what they’re doing while doing it. To improve your focus, set time limits for when certain tasks need to be completed. This will keep you from becoming distracted. Another way to improve focus is by working in a quiet environment. Shut the door and turn off music or background noise so you can fully concentrate on the tasks at hand.

 

Prioritize Your Time

Complete tasks that have specific deadlines first and concentrate on other tasks later on. Make a list of daily goals with the most important listed first. This will help you stay focused on completing these tasks first.During a long workday, it’s important to take frequent breaks in order to help the mind stay focused. Make sure you stagger your breaks throughout the day so you will have enough energy to complete all the tasks on your goal sheet.
