How to Increase Your Value and Visibility at Work

Posted by Editor @ 8:31 PM, Monday May 12th, 2008

It’s important to be visible and add value in your job. Often people can either allow someone else to take the credit for their hard work or it goes unnoticed. This can lead to someone else getting the promotion you deserve, and can seriously jeopardize your own job. However, it is possible to be noticed for your hard work, without being a braggart.

Here are a few ways to stay visible within the workplace:

1) <!–[endif]–>If you are put in charge of a project, update your boss on a regular basis. By doing this, you seem communicative and at the same time, you can point out exactly what you and your team are accomplishing.

<!–[if !supportLists]–>2) <!–[endif]–>Take your boss out for lunch. By doing so, you make yourself more visible and it allows you to hear what’s important to them in a more casual setting. They also get the opportunity to hear what’s important to you.

<!–[if !supportLists]–>3) <!–[endif]–>Ask your boss or colleague for feedback on a project, just so you can let them know how successful it’s going. This is a great way to show off without seeming to do so.

<!–[if !supportLists]–>4) <!–[endif]–>For many of us, accepting a compliment gracefully is a hard thing to do. We tend to downplay our own worth. Instead, practice saying, “Thank you.” By downplaying your worth, you undermine your confidence as well as your boss’s confidence in you.

<!–[if !supportLists]–>5) <!–[endif]–>Never make excuses for success. The next time you get a compliment for a job well done, don’t blame your success on luck or timing. Just say, “Thank you.”

<!–[if !supportLists]–>6) <!–[endif]–>Encourage yourself. Talk to yourself silently. Tell yourself that you can do it, and you’ll find you probably can. The next time you’re feeling down about yourself, or need the confidence, create an internal voice that encourages you. Everyone has self-doubt, but the successful person doesn’t allow their self-doubts to rule their lives. They work through it.

<!–[if !supportLists]–>7) <!–[endif]–><!–[if !supportLists]–>Create a file that contains your accomplishments. The next time a customer sends you an email, expressing what a good job you did, simply place it in your file. The next time you have a performance review, bring your folder and show your boss.

 8) Learn to handle criticism. Learn from your mistakes and take the criticism with a smile   on your face. This way, you will be remembered for being open-minded, instead of as a  poor loser.

<!–[if !supportLists]–>9) <!–[endif]–>If there are any group functions, meetings or volunteer positions, do a few of them. Your boss will see you as a dedicated, driven person and an asset to their company. It’s a great way to get noticed.

<!–[if !supportLists]–>10) <!–[endif]–>If you have a company newsletter, get your accomplishments or successful projects mentioned in it. This will help show off your value to the company and get you noticed by the boss.

By using a few of the tips above, you can greatly improve on your visibility and enhance your reputation for being a employee who adds value.
