Business Networking: How to Network in Your Job
Category: Business Networking
First and foremost you need to know what networking is and how it can benefit you in the long run. Networking is simply the ability to build alliances. Alliances can be formed for several reasons such as job searching, deal searching, looking for new clients or sending clients to other people who are fit for the job the client needs done. Networking is not just a cold call to someone you don’t know or someone you just kind of know. It’s done between people who know each other and take the time to be a solid piece of the puzzle in your network.
Networking with others people at work such as bosses and co-workers is very important for anyone who wants to succeed in the grand scheme of things. To start networking the best way is to get to know people. Start talking to your co-workers. By getting to know each person as an individual instead of just a co-worker, will help you to see where the relationship can help you and your networking abilities.
Don’t instantly try to network with people. Sometimes people get defensive or apprehensive of what you are trying to do. In this day and age people are clinging to their jobs and never want to feel threatened so just be friendly first. Once you have gotten to know someone you can network with them.
You can also network with people who are in other offices or departments. This can help you to gain clients or refer clients to someone else who can handle the job that your current client needs done. Maybe you have a great conversation with someone who is in another state that works for your company, network with them. Find out their area of expertise and make sure to talk about yours too. Let them know that if you ever see anything that fits their area of expertise, you will send the details to them and ask that they do the same.
About 80% of jobs and clients come from word of mouth, not from advertising. This means that networking is almost as important as doing a good job for your client. You want people to know your name, you want them to know what you can do, you want them to send work and people your way. This is all part of building your career to be as fruitful and profitable as possible.
So now that you know what networking is, how to accomplish it and how it can affect you, this is the time to get started building your networking system. Remember to be open and honest with people and always give your best to every client you have even if the best thing you can do is send them to someone in your network. This will earn you respect and word of mouth advertising since the best way for people to know about you is by the reviews a past client offers.
