With the economy the way it is you might be worried about your current job status. This is understandable because everyone is feeling the credit crunch in many different ways. However, if you want to avoid the impact of job losses there are several things that you need to do.
Here are some tactics to deal with or prepare for the worst:
- Identify what you would do if you lost your job today. This is important because if you know what you will do you won’t have to panic if it happens. Today your job is only as secure as your next paycheck and if you have a plan you will be safer than if you do not have one.
- Start saving as much as you can just in case. It’s better to prepare for the worst than to think that it won’t happen and not have a way to deal with a job search. As the old adage says, It’s better to be safe than sorry.
- Create the right attitude for yourself. Many things can happen in a job and job losses are only one of the ways that this can happen. Update your resume, start looking at jobs that are available and do some preliminary job research. Check into careers that are similar to the one you are in because you might find something new to do.
- Keep your credit in order. If you have bad credit now, don’t make it worse by applying for credit cards or by taking out other credit to try and fix what has already been ruined. Instead, take an assessment of where you are, make payments where you can and pay off what you can. You can put yourself into a better space credit wise in case you need it.
- Look for a second job opportunity. This does not mean to go out and get a second job but it may be time to see what you could do out of your home. As an example, if you are a good writer you may be able to take a writing course and put yourself in the position to produce excellent quality as a freelance writer. You may have skills that you can use to start your own business. The Chamber of Commerce in your city can help you find the resources you need to start a new business.
