7 Career Progression & Job Hunting Tips

Posted by Editor @ 11:16 AM, Tuesday Apr 28th, 2009

Is it really possible to recession proof your career. Most people don’t believe it’s possible, but there is a reason why some people manage to avoid being laid off. Is it luck, or do some people know something that the average person doesn’t. Follow these 7 Career Progression tactics to take your career moving in the right direction:

  1. Know what you want. Whether you have worked in one industry for a long time or you are looking for a career change, it is important to know exactly what you want. Do you want to stay in the career field you are in now? Do you want to transition to something different? It’s important to know where you are headed.
  2. Create a career development plan. Once you know what you want, it’ s important to devise a plan of how to get there. Write down courses you want to take, training to upgrade your skills or anything that you can do to meet your current and future career needs.
  3. Refresh your resume. Stay away from the old resumes that only told an employer about the various jobs you had. Instead, target your resume to specific jobs. Today people who are successful in their job search target specific skills and attitudes that particular jobs need.
  4. Manage your career. Take charge of your career and create what you want. If you like the industry you are in, your career development may mean taking classes or online courses that upgrade your skills. Seminars and conferences may be good to keep you knowledgeable about innovations in your field. Use your knowledge of the industry to move forward.
  5. Look for innovation. Look for ways that you can influence the industry in which you are working. Look around your company and see what others are doing and then look for ways to improve what you see. Employers are always looking for people with new ideas and they will encourage your career progression when they like what they see.
  6. Position yourself for success. Keep your eyes and ears open for new opportunities. Check with your boss for any new projects that may be coming down the road and volunteer to do those you feel competent in doing them. Organize your career development so you are in the right place at the right time.
  7. Network, Network, Network. Talk to people inside your company as well as outside it. Talk to people about what you want to do, where you are now and how you want to move forward.
